Med school sucks. No, that's not an opinion. Academic Medicine
reports that 22% of medical students show signs of depression. As was commented
on US News,
the reasons boil down to:
- - having to give up your social network and activities (even explicitly promoted and required by professors; yes, exactly those professors
who were those students you didn't like, before they became professors)
- - no time for family and friends
- - arbritrary grading
- - high external pressure from outside to do everything perfectly
- - lack of previous experiences of failure, perfectionism
- - complexity of medical diagnosis and decision-making
I couldn't have summed it up more precisely. This is of course a
recipe for depression.
