Leave Religion Alone

author: florin

To all scientists: do you enjoy it when religious crackpots tell you why science sucks, and how it's all a lie, and how you're being brainwashed by TheEvil(tm), and how you don't understand shit about God and what religion means? Is it driving you nuts when religious people, who don't know jack about "verifiable and falsifiable", the meaning of "hard facts" and of "experimental proof" turn their heads in disgrace whenever you try to have a decent conversation with them?

Well, guess what! Whatever you think you know about religion is most probably wrong. You don't know shit about God, the purpose of religion, the history of its development and the gaps it closes. With a probability close to unity you've been misinformed, and now you... believe about religion whatever you choose to, but which is far from what it is supposed to be. Some jackass somewhere along the way told you science is TheOnlyTrueWay(tm), 42, the answer to God, the Universe and Everything And that everything else must, by definition, be second to that. And you sooo bought it!

You're not being any better than the religious crackpots you're trying to criticize! Understand me correctly, I don't mean to defend those people -- the are crackpots, all right... But that doesn't change the fact that you're behaving exactly the same: you're judging over something you don't know anything beyond the populistic mumble you heard (or made up yourself), as if your life depended on it! So... now that I told you: wake up, take a deep breath and a step back. Then leave the religious crackpots be crackpots, and the religious masterminds go their way. And you, don't be a crackpot: be a good scientist and SHUT THE FUCK UP if you don't know what you're talking about!

(Disclaimer: I Am A Scientist. And I Am Religious, also. And while I may not be a genius, I can assure you I'm definitely more than average in either of the two. So take my word for it when I tell you: every time you feel an urging need to comment on a religious person's affinity for religion, chances are pretty big you're getting it wrong. You know just as little about religion as you imply he/she knows about science!)
